On 14-15 January 2017, idsMED Indonesia with RSCM (Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital) conducted a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) basic training course titled “PICC: Insertion and Maintenance to avoid Blood Stream Infection”, specially designed for medical staff in treating infants, specifically the premature and seriously ill new-born. The event covered the basic technique of insertion and maintenance to avoid blood stream infection. The topic has become a trend in recent years, due to the PICC unique ability to stay longer in the blood vessels compared to the commonly used peripheral IV .

In general, it is highly unlikely for premature or seriously ill infants to receive their basic nutrition orally, therefore TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) or nutritional feeding through the infants’ veins will be mainly needed in their treatment. In most cases, the osmolality and pH of the liquid is quite extreme and could cause irritation to the infants’ blood vessels, so it needs to access through the central (to the large blood vessels) using PICC.

The seminar and workshop provided the participating doctors and nurses in-depth knowledge in regards to PICC preparation, installation and maintenance. Speakers and organizers of the seminar and workshop are the perinatology team of RSCM. idsMED was the main sponsor in this event, and has routinely supported PICC workshops for NICU nurses.

In Indonesia, Vygon has become the market leader for PICC neonate. Vygon is one of the principal that is currently distributed by idsMED.
