Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that can gradually steal vision without warning. Often progressing silently, it remains one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding the disease and taking proactive steps to protect eye health.

  • What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is essential for vision. This damage is commonly associated with increased intraocular pressure, though glaucoma can also occur with normal eye pressure. Over time, untreated glaucoma leads to permanent vision loss, starting with peripheral vision.
  • Why Early Detection Matters
In its early stages, glaucoma usually shows no symptoms. Vision loss often occurs gradually and may go unnoticed until significant damage has already occurred. Regular comprehensive eye exams—including eye pressure measurement and optic nerve evaluation—are the most effective way to detect glaucoma early.
  • Prevention and Risk Reduction
While glaucoma cannot always be prevented, early detection greatly reduces the risk of vision loss. Individuals over 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, or high eye pressure, are encouraged to undergo routine eye screenings as part of preventive care.
  • Treatment and Management
Although there is no cure for glaucoma, it can be effectively managed. Treatment options include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, and surgical procedures to lower eye pressure and prevent further optic nerve damage. Early and consistent treatment helps preserve remaining vision.

By raising awareness, encouraging routine eye exams, and promoting early treatment, Glaucoma Awareness Month reinforces a vital message: protecting vision begins with knowledge and regular eye care.
