idsMED Singapore supported Mount Alvernia Hospital on 3 November 2019 for their inaugural community carnival in support of the Rare Disease Fund. The event was held at Punggol Town Square from 8:30am to 2:00pm, and was graced by Guest-of-Honor Senior Minister of State for Law and Health, Mr Edwin Tong.

What are rare diseases?

A rare disease is one that affects fewer than one in 2,000 patients. Rare diseases can affect anyone and are mostly genetic - caused by changes in genes or chromosomes and affecting the body’s ability to produce enzymes or biochemicals needed for the body to function normally. Often diagnosed at birth or early childhood, most conditions can be life threatening without therapy as many rare diseases are fatal. Approximately one-third of rare disease patients worldwide do not live beyond the age of five.

The Rare Disease Fund administered by the KKH Women’s and Children’s Hospital is a charity fund that aims to provide long-term financial support for patients with rare diseases that require expensive treatment plans. The fund supports patients with clinically proven, effective medication that can extend their lifespan.

idsMED volunteers set up two carnival booths selling sweet treats and walking balloons. Those who weren’t volunteers also made a trip down to the carnival to show their support. Other than the carnival booths, there was also a mass tai chi session, other fitness sessions, a band performance, an wushu performance and even a magic show. Great job team for stepping up and doing your part for charity!
