Anxiety in the Age of Social Media

Anxiety can be fuelled by everyday social media habits—like constant comparison, FOMO, excessive screen time, and exposure to unrealistic or negative content. While often overlooked, these small triggers can build up over time, making anxiety harder to manage. Being more mindful of online habits can help reduce these effects early.

Anxiety doesn’t always come from big problems; it comes from simple daily habits like scrolling through social media. The difference is that anxiety is not just normal worry. It can feel excessive, keep coming back, and be hard to control, even when you’re not using social media. Without realising it, what we see online every day can make these feelings stronger, especially when we start comparing ourselves to others. Here are some things on social media that can trigger anxiety:
  1. Comparing yourself to others
Seeing other people’s lives that look more “perfect” can make you feel not good enough or left behind.
  2. FOMO (fear of missing out)
The fear of missing trends or moments can make you feel like you must always keep up.
  3. Too much screen time
Spending too much time scrolling can make your mind feel crowded and tired.
  4. Pressure to look perfect
Trying to always appear good on social media can add pressure without you realising it.
  5. Unhealthy content
Seeing too much negative or toxic content can affect your mood and increase anxious feelings.
Anxiety can come from small things we often overlook. Being more mindful when using social media can help reduce these feelings before they become overwhelming.
