On World No Tobacco Day (31 May), the conversation is shifting beyond traditional cigarettes to a new landscape of nicotine use—where vaping, flavours, and modern habits intersect.

Vaping is often perceived as a cleaner or less harmful alternative, but its appeal is strongly shaped by flavour. Sweet, fruity, and dessert-like options can make nicotine feel less harsh, lowering the barrier for first-time users and making it easier to continue. What starts as curiosity can quickly turn into routine use.

The challenge is that nicotine—regardless of how it’s delivered—remains addictive. Flavoured products may mask the intensity, but they don’t remove the dependence. Over time, this can make quitting just as difficult, if not more so, especially when usage becomes a frequent, almost unconscious habit.

Breaking that cycle starts with awareness. Recognising triggers, setting boundaries, and gradually reducing intake are practical first steps. Support systems—whether through professional guidance, digital tools, or peer encouragement—can also make a meaningful difference.

Quitting today isn’t just about willpower; it’s about understanding how modern products shape behaviour. By looking beyond the flavour and focusing on long-term health, individuals can take back control—one step at a time.
