Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide and remains a major cause of illness and death. While genetics play a role, lifestyle choices—especially diet—are key factors in preventing type 2 diabetes or managing blood sugar levels effectively.

Making healthy food choices can go a long way toward lowering your risk. Here are five types of foods that can help:

  1. Leafy Greens and Non-Starchy Vegetables
Vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower are low in calories and carbohydrates but rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They help regulate blood sugar levels and support overall health.
  2. Whole Grains
Whole grains such as oats, quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat contain more fibre than refined grains. Fibre slows down sugar absorption in the bloodstream, helping prevent sudden spikes in blood glucose.
  3. Lean Proteins
Sources like fish, chicken, tofu, beans, and lentils provide essential nutrients and promote satiety, which helps control appetite and maintain a healthy weight—an important factor in diabetes prevention.
  4. Healthy Fats
Foods rich in unsaturated fats, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, support heart health and improve insulin sensitivity. These are healthier alternatives to saturated and trans fats found in processed foods.
  5. Fruits (in Moderation)
Fresh fruits like berries, apples, and citrus fruits offer vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants. However, it’s best to enjoy them in moderation and choose whole fruits over juices to avoid excess sugar intake.

A balanced diet—combined with regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and routine health check-ups—can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes and promote long-term wellness.
